Reidar Särestöniemi (1925-1981) was one of the most important artists in Lapland. Especially well-known are his large, strong, Lapland-inspired oil paintings that he painted in the 1960's and 1970's.
Excluding the time he spent studying, he lived his whole life in Särestöniemi estate, in the village of Kaukonen, some 25 km away from central Kittilä. The area consists of an atelier, a gallery and a cafeteria that are designed by an architect couple Reima and Raili Pietilä. The old Särestö estate and its 100-year-old main building are a natural part of the museum. The museum presents Reidar Särestöniemi's production and changing exhibitions from other artists. High quality chamber music concerts are organized in Särestö.
