Karinnokka Lean-To

The Karinnokka Lean-To in Kittilä Village, near the birdwatching tower, is maintained by Kittilä Municipality. The lean-to is meant for public recreational use and has both a firepit and a woodshed with firewood that can be used by visitors. You can see Ounasjoki River and Levi Fell from Karinnokka.

The lean-to is not meant for long-term daytime use or overnight stays. The firewood in the woodshed is only meant to be used in the lean-to’s firepit. There is a surveillance camera in the area; any wrongful behavior will be dealt with as necessary.

Karinnokka Birdwatching Tower

The Karinnokka Birdwatching Tower is located on Karinnokka in Kittilä Village, near the waters of Aakennusjoki/Kirkkojärvi and Ounasjoki Rivers, where you’ll find lots of interesting species of birds.

Since 1974, about 130 different species of birds have made an appearance in the area.

The tower’s lower level is accessible by ramp, for example with a wheelchair or stroller. The tower has two levels, both of which have information boards about the birds and waters of the area. Paavo Laine, an artist from Rovaniemi, has painted the birds on the information boards.

A maximum of 12 people can be on the upper level at a time. There is a box with a book in it for writing observations. Visitors are requested to write down their observations about birds and nature when visiting.

Kittilän Luonto ry initiated the tower project for the Municipality of Kittilä. Kittilä Municipality, Lapland ELY-Centre, and the Kittilä Employment and Economic Development Office implemented the project, in cooperation with Kideve (Kittilä Development) and Kittilän Luonto ry.

The tower was completed in 2011, and it is owned and maintained by the Municipality of Kittilä.
