Pet cemetery guidelines:
- The pet cemetery in Kittilä is meant only for residents of Kittilä Municipality.
- Consider burying your pet on your own land before contacting the pet cemetery. Another option is cremation.
- The area is meant for burying dogs, cats, rodents, birds, and other small pet animals.
- The pet owner is responsible for burying and maintaining the grave. You’ll find the necessary tools for this at the cemetery, which is open year-round. During winter, the municipality will dig the grave and provide gravel for covering it up.
- The pet must be placed next to the previous grave; there must be no unnecessary gaps!
The area is divided into two sections:
I-section for smaller pets, under 40kg
II-section for bigger pets, above 40kg
- The pet or its ashes must be buried in a decomposable box or coffin, or wrapped in decomposable cloth. The use of anything that does not decompose, such as plastic, is not allowed.
- The grave can be marked with something natural, such as a stone or piece of wood. Crosses (or anything cross-related) are not allowed. If anything like this is found, it will be changed to a slab of rock (for example).
- Planting trees, bushes, or perennials is not allowed. Small flowers in pots can be brought to the grave.
- The price for the grave site is 50€ (incl. VAT). After payment, you’ll have the grave site for 30 years. Payment can be made through Kittilä Municipality’s online store: Pet cemetary | verkkokauppa.kittila.fi
- Upon payment, you’ll receive a key code, which can be used to get into the storage and cemetery area. The pet cemetery is kept locked because other municipalities have seen improper burials carried out. By locking the cemetery, we ensure the safety of all pets buried in the cemetery.
Minimum grave depth by law:
- Over 40kg pets, at least 1 meter deep
- Under 40kg pets, at least 0,5 meters deep
