Cultural services create a space for experiencing art and culture in many ways

Kittilä Municipality’s cultural services promote the making and practicing of art, the accessibility of culture, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Cultural services organize a diverse range of cultural events year-round, both alone and in cooperation with other cultural actors/organizations, and is responsible for the Local Heritage Museum Vaaranmikkola and Kino Yläri Movie Theater. The cultural secretary is responsible for all cultural activities in the municipality. 

Cultural services also support volunteer work in the culture space through grants. Associations and private individuals can apply for arts and culture grants during the spring. The grant application and instructions can be found at  Forms (in Finnish).

Culture in Kittilä

The Kittilä Local Heritage Museum in Pakatti has artifacts of local peasants from the early-1900s on display. The museum area is made up of old buildings arranged in the ‘Rear Bothnia’-Lappish style, situated in a scenic location on the Ounasjoki River. The local villages also participate in museum activities, displaying things such as old tools and farmyards/homesteads.

Films are shown by Kittilä Municipality regularly at the local movie theater, Kino Yläri. Theater is also a regular part of cultural life in Kittilä. 

The Kittilä Library  has a monthly exhibit and various cultural events year-round.

The Staalo Art Association maintains the area’s strong artistic roots. Kittilä also has a tradition of craftsmanship and fiddler music, as well as a number of choirs. These different cultural events (in Finnish) bring life and color to Kittilä throughout the year. There are also many local arts and culture associations active in Kittilä. 

There is a strong tradition of visual arts in Kittilä and nature serves as an inspiration to many. The artists of the area play an important role in Finnish and Lappish art history. These artists have not only captured Kittilä as it is, but have built its multidimensional spiritual atmosphere, conveying different experiences and stories of the area.
