Borrowing

You can get a library card when starting the first grade. The first library card is free of charge, renewal costs 3 euros. 

The same card can be used at the Main Library, the Mobile Library, and all other libraries in Lapland that are part of the Lapland Library network. You must always show your library card when reserving materials. 

Please always let the library know if your address changes. 

Loan periods 

Loan periods at the Main Library are:

  • 4 weeks for books, audiobooks, and language courses
  • 2 weeks for magazines, CDs, and console games
  • 2 weeks for DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and videos

The loan period for the Mobile Library is 3 weeks, regardless of the type of material borrowed. If the Mobile Library is not operating due to a public holiday, the due date will be move to the next time it returns to that stop.

Borrowing and renewing

You can borrow or renew materials by logging in to Lapland Library e-services. In order to borrow or renew any materials, you need a library card number and PIN-code, which you can get from the Main Library or Mobile Library.

You can also renew your loan by phone (040 728 5733 or Mobile Library 0400 392 854) or email (kirjasto@kittila.fi or kirjastoauto@kittila.fi) if no-one else has reserved the same material. Always provide your library card number to speed up the renewal process. 

E-library

As of 1.1.2025, you have access to both the national E-library and Northern eLibrary resources and services.

E-books, audiobooks, newspapers, and magazines are available through the national E-library. 

The Northern eLibrary has movies, music and singing lessons, classical music recordings, and concerts. 

To use the Northern eLibrary, you must provide your library card and PIN-code, which you can get from the library. To use the national E-library, you need to log in using strong electronic identification, such as mobile ID or banking credentials. At the moment, only the mobile version works for this service.

The public computer in the magazine area has newspapers such as Lapin Kansa and Helsingin Sanomat, among many others. You can browse the selection available on the ePress-page.

Interlibrary loans

If the material you want is not in Lapin kirjasto, it can be ordered for you as an interlibrary loan from other libraries. Interlibrary loans are subject to a fee, usually 5€/item. The fee is based on the rate of the library sending the item, 5-10€ from university libraries.
