Responsibilities of property owners and the municipality in keeping streets clean

In Levi’s central area, property owners are responsible for keeping street areas clean, in accordance with the Act on the Maintenance and Cleanliness of Streets and Certain Public Areas.

The property owner holds the responsibility of cleaning the street adjacent to their property from the boundary of their plot until the center line of the street. This applies to drivable roads and sidewalks. Maintenance includes removal of accumulated dirt, leaves, waste, and other loose materials, as well as removal of weeds from the road and sidewalk areas.

If the property does not reach the street area, the property owner must take care of the area up to 3 meters past the boundary of their plot.

The municipality maintains public areas and empties sidewalk waste bins

Kittilä Municipality is responsible for emptying waste bins and loose waste in Levi’s central area in the following places: Levintori, Kappeliaukio, and Vesitori (the opening at the start of Keskuskuja). In addition, the municipality takes care of sidewalk waste bins in Levi.
During summer maintenance of outdoor trails, waste that is within sight will be picked up. The sweeping of roads is done during fall and late spring, when the snow has melted.
The management of parks and forest parks belongs to the municipality, if they are owned by the municipality. Otherwise, property owners are responsible for keeping their park or forest areas clean.
