The Kapsajoki River in Kittilä offers a diverse and accessible water trail featuring a comprehensive network of rest stops and landing sites along its route. The Kapsajoki Water Trail strengthens the attractiveness of Kittilä and Lapland’s river destinations and makes the region’s water-based outdoor experiences accessible to a wider audience.
During 2025, the Municipality of Kittilä constructed new facilities along the route to enhance recreational opportunities on the river. These new structures are located along a 95-kilometre trail that begins at Lake Pyhäjärvi in northern Kittilä, follows the Kapsajoki River, and ends at the Torpanniva lean-to landing site on the Ounasjoki River in Sirkka, Levi. The trail includes a total of twelve rest areas, ten of which are newly built by the Municipality of Kittilä, with one maintained by Metsähallitus. Several access points can be reached by car and may be used as starting or ending points for trips along the route.
The Trail Provides Rest Areas, Landing Sites and Outdoor Recreation Opportunities
The rest areas and landing sites built along the Kapsajoki Water Trail serve river travellers, local residents and visitors to the area. They are equipped for outdoor recreation with lean-tos, wilderness huts or cabins, campfire sites and toilets. Firewood has been provided for visitors’ use at the rest areas.
The trail is suitable for both novice and experienced paddlers. The river remains relatively shallow throughout the route, and its rapids are classified as Grade I-II, meaning that most sections are easy to navigate, with some moderately challenging stretches. The route can be paddled in its entirety or divided into shorter sections using the landing sites and designated starting and ending points.
The area offers opportunities for canoeing and kayaking, nature photography, birdwatching and hiking along riverside trails. The Kapsajoki River also provides fishing opportunities. Permit requirements vary between different water areas, so visitors should consult the Eräluvat service and Retkikartta for up-to-date information.
Visitors should note that access by car is via forest roads of varying condition. In spring, thaw-related road conditions may make reaching the river, particularly its upper sections, more challenging. It is therefore advisable to check local conditions before setting out.
Designed with Environmental Responsibility and Sustainable Tourism in Mind
Visitors are encouraged to follow the principles of sustainable tourism while using the trail. For longer stops, designated rest areas should be used, and all waste should be carried out and disposed of appropriately. Outdoor enthusiasts are asked to respect nature, other trail users and other activities taking place in the area.
The trail is intended for use during the snow-free season and is maintained accordingly. The Municipality of Kittilä is responsible for the maintenance of the rest areas and landing sites it has constructed.
