Environmental permits

According to the Environmental Protection Act, the Land Extraction Act, and the Waste Act, a permit, notification, or registration is required for certain activities. Contact the municipal or government environmental protection authorities regarding these matters.

The municipality’s environmental protection activities are regulated by the Environmental Protection Act, the Land Extraction Act, the Waste Act, the Water Services Act, the Water Act, the Outdoor Recreation Act, the Off-Road Traffic Act, and the Water Traffic Act, as well as any laws related to these acts. 

Stray animals

Polar Lights Tours Oy operates a shelter for stray animals in the Municipality of Kittilä. The animal shelter only takes in domestic animals. Other wild animals do not belong in the shelter. In these cases, contact the police (112, general emergency number), or in situations where your pet or others may be in danger. If you suspect animal abuse, report an animal welfare incident to the official veterinarian during working hours. Contact the police outside working hours. 

Dog parks

The dog parks in the Municipality of Kittilä are meant for all dogs. Dog owners are responsible for the behavior of their dogs in the parks. Dogs must always be healthy, vaccinated, and supervised when visiting the dog parks. 


The technical department of Kittilä Municipality is responsible for the maintenance of the dog parks listed below.

Dog tracks

Certain sections of cross-country skiing tracks can be used with dogs as long as they are on a leash. Dog tracks are clearly marked with a dog symbol and red dashed line on the track maps of Kittilä Village and the Levi area.

Commuter and other transport services in Kittilä

There is a commuter service line that is open to all and works on an on-call basis. When you want a ride for Meän Pirssi, call the route operator at least one day in advance. You’ll receive information about the exact time and pickup location. The trip costs the same as bus transport.
