The council is responsible for the operation and finances of the municipality, exercises the municipality's decision-making power and transfers its authority with the provisions of the administrative regulation. The municipal government is responsible for the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the legality of the council's decisions. The municipal government manages the operation, administration and finances of the municipality. The boards are institutions under the government.

There are more than 30 villages in Kittilä, while the number of inhabitants varies from less than ten to several hundred. The area of ​​the municipality is large – the distance between the northernmost and southernmost villages is more than 140 kilometers.

Large area (1/3) of the Finland's most popular national park, Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, is in Kittilä. The municipality has several tourist and cultural attractions as well as nature sites.
